Why Promote Beekeeping
Most of the income generating activities have a detrimental impact on the natural environment whereas the beekeeping is the one of the very important environmentally friendly activity, bees pollinate cultivated and wild plants which helps to maintain the natural bio-diversity and the beekeepers automatically become aware of their environment :ensuring that flowers are available and bees are protected.
- Bees pollinate cultivated and wild plants.
- Honey is valued by all societies.
- Beeswax is useful: for products like candles and soap, and in crafts like batik and lost-wax casting.
- Beekeeping is possible for people with few resources: bees can be obtained from the wild and equipment can be made locally. Bees do not depend on the beekeeper for food.
- Beekeeping does not use up land needed for crops. Bees collect where they can, so wild, cultivated and wasteland areas all have value for beekeeping.
- Nectar and pollen are not used by other livestock: only bees harvest these resources.
- Beekeeping generates income without destroying habitat.
- Beekeepers gain financial interest in caring for their environment: ensuring that flowers are available and bees are protected.
- Bees can kept by people of all ages. Bees do not need daily care and beekeeping can be done when other work allows.
